US polymer exporters have traditionally faced little serious competition for supplying Latin American markets given their proximity and speed of deliveries. However, logistics logjams that have hindered US exports since late 2021 prompted Latin buyers to look elsewhere for supply, most notably Asia, after record-high container freight rates that rendered Asian volumes unworkable plummeted throughout 2022. As 2023 shapes up to be a year of soft demand, exporters continue to eye Latin markets as critical destinations with Asian suppliers keen to maintain market share gained and US suppliers equally keen to re-establish more reliable flows as lingering logistics issues resume some normalcy by the middle of the year.
