In 2022, with the slowdown of the economy and the turmoil in the energy markets, mainland China’s short-term policy focus was prioritizing economic growth stability and energy supply security. Nonetheless, China remains firmly committed to the medium- to long-term goals of peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060. Following the carbon pledges in September 2020, ambitious green transition targets, which center around renewable deployment, have been set. This presentation looks at how likely these targets will be achieved, what are the key associated uncertainties, and what outlook can be expected in China’s low carbon future.
