Hydrogen has been around in the industry for more than a century. Interest in hydrogen as a solution for sustainable energy has been going on for quite a while seeing several waves of interest, but did not materialize due to ebbs and flow of oil and gas prices In recent years, recognition on climate change and its effects started to translate into policy action, increasing attention on hydrogen. This talk will look at the evolution of hydrogen, its current role in the industry, and explore the status and potential of hydrogen as a key enabler for the energy transition to drive zero-emission energy systems. The position of hydrogen within other forms of energy supply and storage is determined, and relevant examples are provided to demonstrate hydrogen’s capabilities to decarbonize our energy systems and industrial processes.
